Road Safety Assessments of E Class Roads, Abu Dhabi

Department of Transport

Description

In order to maintain pace with economic development in the region, the highway network in Abu Dhabi has grown at a rapid rate.  In some instances, the road network can be confusing in terms of its purpose and hierarchy.  Consequently, a significant proportion of road users adopt the wrong driving behaviour in relation to the road they are using.  Furthermore, not all highway infrastructure is appropriate for the driving demands and expectations of drivers.
The Abu Dhabi Department of Transport appointed consultants to carry out Road Safety Assessments of E Class Roads and Mark Hedley was the Team Leader.

Objectives

The objective of the Road Safety Assessments to make an assessment of each identified hazard on the network, categorise the risk of each hazard (influenced by likely collision frequency and severity) and identify a risk reduction or mitigation measure and associated costs. Assessment work began in October 2009 on approximately 2500km of Abu Dhabi E Class roads.

The Assessment required day and night time assessment of conditions to identify road safety hazards and the logging of road safety issues with photos and video, all referenced using GPS coordinates. Individual route reports identifying remedial measures were then produced.
